I came across my mum's old ceramic plates; these were used occasionally and kept away until there is another cause for its use. We admired these plates, howbeit from afar as if it represents something tied to family heritage. I later got to know that these plates were passed down to her from her mother and now that she is gone, it has been passed down to us the children. However, I noticed that as these plates are passed down from one generation to the other, they either increase in value or depreciate: this is largely dependent on the handlers of these heirlooms. There are gifts inherent in us which may have been passed down to us, innate and peculiar to us; This may be our skin colour, dentition, our features or talent. When we treat these as treasures, they shine as treasures but when ignored and treated with disdain, they lose their essence and remain in shadows

Artist Statement
Every attempt at an artwork is like holding a tablet of destiny in my hands, with the freedom to make of it what I want, every brush stroke having a message, coming together to make the painting a living entity. Despite painting using photo references, I do everything possible to capture the unseen elements: the energy, the rough texture of nature, the uncertainty of life and the subjectivity of outcome. All these are evident in the heavy brush work and suggestive strokes in my works.Though I would not want to be boxed in the 'isms' of the art world, my works are somewhat a blend of Impressionism and Realism; They combine the spontaneity of the Impressionists with the colours of Realism. So we could call it "Impressionistic realism". My works could however, take a different turn as I look to place priority on the painting than on nomenclature.
