"The Mother’s Love" is a tender, luminous celebration of black maternal intimacy especially mothers by circumstances(single mothers). The piece is a mixed media blend of oils, acrylic and Charcoal.
At the heart of the canvas, a young mother is seen with her strong yet gentle hands weaving through her own young daughter’s hair. Every stroke of the mother’s fingers is deliberate and reverent, as if each twist and coil is an act of blessing. Her face tilts downward in quiet concentration, eyes softly closed, a faint smile of contentment resting on her lips. The light catches the gold chain at her neck, her orange and white Ear ring and the warm glow of her skin, giving her an aura of timeless dignity.
She is a beautiful young lady painted in monochromatic expression as it embodies her story. In Africa we stereotype people by the acts or occurrences in their lives. This piece goes out to everyone young woman who has a child out of wedlock. Irrespective of the abuses, neglects, rejection, the bond between her and her child is second to none. Every mother who sits to plait the hair of her child knows it that there is a bond. In this case, as she plaits the hair, many thoughts, wishes, desires and hopes floods her mind. She decided to keep this child even when she could have aborted. For it isn’t easy to be a single mother. Th me weight of the society can be seen on her skin but she loves her child irrespective.
Beneath her hands, the daughter leans back in complete surrender, her small frame cradled between her mother’s knees. She is dressed in a magnificent red garment ablaze with intricate gold embroidery and delicate white floral motifs .Her expression is one of pure, wide-eyed trust, gaze lifted toward the viewer as though she is suspended in a moment that will live in her forever. The contrast between the child’s bright, inquisitive eyes and her mother’s serene, inward focus creates a poignant emotional bridge across generations. The daughter is nurtured to become better than her. Plaited with strokes of wisdom to grow well and bold. Not to do the mistakes of her mother but to become stronger and better.
The painting radiates warmth, protection, and unspoken wisdom. It is not merely a portrait of hair-braiding; it is a message of love made tangible, the braiding, a proof of her strength and might as an heritage braided into every strand. As a multimedia artist, my works seeks to explore the profound beauty that exists within the human experience. More so diving into past experiences that are undertones to our survival which have become part of our existence.
