Description

Dancing Queens Dancing Queens was inspired by an everyday moment witnessed during a prolonged power outage. While observing the neighborhood from a balcony, the artist noticed two women dancing across the street despite the challenging circumstances affecting the community. As business owners, the women were equally impacted by the blackout, yet they chose to embrace a moment of joy. The work explores the idea of joy as an act of resilience rather than a reaction to favorable conditions. Through the movement of the figures and the expressive handling of paint, the painting celebrates the human capacity to find lightness, connection, and hope in the midst of uncertainty. By transforming a fleeting observation into a pictorial composition, Dancing Queens serves as a reminder that joy can exist independently of circumstance. The dancing figures become symbols of optimism, strength, and the quiet determination to celebrate life even in difficult moments.

Artist Statement
I paint as a way of understanding myself and the people around me. My work is rooted in human emotion. Those feelings we carry quietly, struggle with daily, or sometimes cannot explain with words. Using the human figure, I tell stories about vulnerability, strength, conflict, hope, and survival. Every figure I paint holds a piece of lived experience, whether personal or shared. My process is intuitive and emotional. I do not approach the canvas with complete control or fixed outcomes. Instead, I allow the painting to evolve naturally. Influenced by Gani Odutokun’s theory of accident and design, I welcome chance, mistakes, and unexpected marks. When paint meets paint or space in unforeseen ways, it often reveals emotions more honestly than planned gestures ever could. The canvas becomes a conversation rather than a surface to dominate.Color is central to how I speak visually. I work with bold, unblended color like purples, reds, blues, yellows, and browns—because they carry mood, tension, and feeling on their own. I let these colors interact freely, creating emotional energy and rhythm within the work. My brushstrokes remain visible, emphasizing movement, presence, and sincerity.Ultimately, my paintings are invitations. I want viewers to pause, feel, and see themselves within the work. I am less interested in perfection than in truth. Through expressive marks, layered paint, and figurative storytelling, I aim to capture what it means to be human—fragile, conflicted, hopeful, and constantly becoming.

About Artisan: Utubor Shadrach Melvin is a modern Nigerian painter whose work delves into the nuances of human emotion through expressive figurative paintings. His work is a result of his lifelong interest in storytelling through visuals, which began in his childhood days of composing comic books and storytelling. The artist’s work is a dialogue between emotion, culture, and his use of the visual language of paints.

Under the tutelage of renowned Nigerian contemporary painter and draughtsman Edosa Oguigo, Shadrach has developed technical expertise while broadening his knowledge of composition, human figure, and narrative artwork. These influences have shaped his style: the employment of gestural brushwork, vivid color schemes, and textured surfaces to allow moods to emerge spontaneously. He prefers to leave colors unblended, resulting in the visual tension between colors to form dynamic and cohesive artworks to convey moods to the viewer. The color schemes he prefers are a mixture of purples, reds, blues, and browns – colors which emit moods and psychological nuances.

In all of his work, Shadrach strives to relate those stories which have a particular appeal in the realms of the social, cultural, and spiritual. His artwork is often characterized by the use of the human figure as the main subject for artistic expression, portraying messages of vulnerability, strife, hope, and triumph. In addition to the aforementioned, the artwork also calls for reflection on the part of the audience.

Shadrach's art is not just about self-expression; he is using art as an invitation for people to observe the expression of emotions, history, and identity in motion. Through the use of skillful art-making ability, mentorship, as well as an intuitive sense for the expression of the human condition, Shadrach is continually developing an exciting body of artwork that is visually stunning as well as profoundly emotional in content, making him an important voice among the young Nigerian contemporary artists.

Description

She stands like everything is in place.Calm, composed, nothing out of line. There’s a way people learn to hold themselves,to stay steady even when there’s more beneath the surface. Not everything she carries is visible. But it’s there. And still, she shows up.

Description

“What We Carry” is about the things women hold without saying much about it. The small pressures, the expectations, the quiet adjustments made every day. In a world where women face so much, seen and unseen, there are things they learn to carry in silence. It’s in the way she shows up, even when she’s tired. In the way she keeps going, even when no one notices. Not everything is spoken. But it is felt.

Description

“It is not the weight you carry that defines you, but the way you carry it.” The Architect of Will is a tribute to the silent, unseen labor of remaining unbroken. The subject’s gaze is not anchored to the present moment, but directed toward a horizon of his own making. His headwrap functions not merely as a garment, but as a crown of resilience, feach fold bearing history, each brushstroke marking a conscious decision to endure. The vibrant, restless yellow surrounding him evokes the noise, heat, and pressure of life. Yet at the center of this intensity, his face stands as a monument of composure. The work asserts that identity is not forged solely by circumstance, but by intention. We are not only shaped by the world around us; we actively design our own dignity. We are, each in our own way, the architects of the strength that keeps us standing when the world expects us to fall.
