Description

The PATHFINDER series explores two kinds of pathfinders: the creators of paths and the restorers of paths. This work draws inspiration from the Yoruba story of Òrúnmìlà, whose wisdom continues to guide generations. Rather than painting him directly, I created my own sage, an original character who embodies the responsibility of creating a path that outlives its creator. To me, a pathfinder is not remembered for the road he travels, but for the road others continue to walk.Seated in meditation, the sage reflects before taking his next step. His staff and orb symbolize wisdom, authority, and the ability to commune between worlds. Resting on his shoulder is the Squirat, a hybrid guardian that moves between civilizations, reminding us that every path begins somewhere and echoes far beyond its origin. The contrasting violet and green landscapes represent two realities: one of limitless possibilities and another sustained by its inheritance. Hybrid life forms inhabit this world, suggesting that imagination, memory, and evolution exist together. Beside the sage lies a book, bearing witness to a life whose greatest achievement is not power, but legacy.A pathfinder's destination is never a place. It is the people who continue to walk the path long after the pathfinder is gone.

My artistic practice explores the people who shape the identity of a people through the paths they create and the ones they choose to restore. Through my ongoing body of work, Pathfinder, I examine individuals who take on the responsibility of preserving, redefining, or establishing the cultural, spiritual, intellectual, and historical foundations that give meaning to a community or civilisation. The series is built around two kinds of pathfinders: the creators of paths, whose ideas, discoveries, beliefs, and leadership establish new directions for generations to follow, and the restorers of paths, who recover traditions, histories, values, and identities that have faded into obscurity or have been deliberately erased. Their journeys are acts of vision, courage, and responsibility, ensuring that future generations inherit more than memories, but a living legacy. My work is informed by historical research, mythology, oral traditions, and African philosophies, revealing the interconnectedness between past and present. I am particularly interested in how cultural identity is preserved, transformed, or reclaimed through the actions of remarkable individuals whose influence extends beyond their own lifetime.Working primarily with oil on canvas, I create stylised figures through a visual language that merges abstract realism with the expressive influence of anime and manga. This approach allows me to combine history, imagination, and symbolism into layered narratives that invite viewers to look beyond the surface of each painting.Ultimately, I hope my work encourages reflection on the importance of those who create and preserve meaningful paths. By celebrating their journeys, I invite viewers to consider their own role in shaping the future and the legacy they leave for those who will follow.

Description

This work marks the beginning of a new series titled PATHFINDERS, inspired by seekers of lost knowledge, forgotten realities, and ancient wisdom. The priestess rides a Cockstrich, a hybrid of a cock and an ostrich, serving as both guide and transport between two civilizations. Around her grow hybrid plants such as the Pumpcorn, symbols of possibility and connection between worlds. She carries a lost deity like a child, representing the Pathfinder's role not only in discovering forgotten things but also nurturing them into influence and expression.A Pathfinder has no destination. What they seek becomes a path for those who follow. While creating this work, a question came to me:Is the present truly between the past and the future, or is the past still living within the present, leading us toward the future?PATHFINDERS explores guides, seekers, and knowledge keepers from different ancient parts of Africa.

My artistic. practice centres around uncovering the lost and hidden records of the past—thosehistories that were forgotten, erased,or never properly told. I am particularly drawn to stories that reveal the identity and achievements of Black people who were also part of the cutting edge of human evolution, global culture, and international exchange. These truths may sometimes appearcontroversial, but they are necessary.Through my art,I aim to awaken something deep within everyBlack person who may not know their roots, just as I once did not. My personal journey of freedom began when I started researching ancient records, and now I tell these stories with every stroke of mybrush. My current project is called the Black Re-imagine Series. It is a celebration of the presence and beauty of Black people in ancient times—placing them in historical contexts across various countries and cultures around the world. This series highlights how they thrived, stood out in their strength and elegance, and embodied virtue, resilience, and dignity. Through detailed portraits and storytelling scenes, I re-imagine how our ancestors might have lived, dressed, and contributed to societies far and wide. It is a reawakening of pride and a restoration of lost images of power and grace. I primarily work with oil on canvas, a medium I deeply appreciate for its flexibility and timeless quality. It allows me to build layers, textures, and emotional depth in ways that connect both the past and present. Oil paint gives my work the richness it needs to carry the weight of these stories—stories that deserve to be told with care and intensity. The medium helps me translate what I see in ancient texts, dreams, and research into powerful visual narratives. Ultimately, my aim is to create art that inspires and restores. I want my work to speak directly to the spirit of those who view it, especially people of African descent. It is about reclaiming the narrative and offering a new lens through which we can see ourselves—not as footnotes in history, but ascentral figures in the story of the world. My art is a call to remember, to reimagine, and to rise.
